Ho Chi Minh City’s Water Sources Are Deteriorating: Why Household Water Treatment Matters

Water is at the heart of a healthy lifestyle. We drink it, cook with it and use it every day. But the quality of the water entering our homes is closely connected to the condition of its sources. For health-conscious households, having access to high-quality water is an essential part of everyday wellbeing. Recent findings on Ho Chi Minh City’s water resources highlight why protecting water quality and choosing the right household water treatment deserve greater attention.

Growing Pressure in Ho Chi Minh City’s Water Sources

Ho Chi Minh City’s two main water sources, the Saigon and Dong Nai rivers, are facing growing pressure. According to recent monitoring, water quality in both rivers declined for a second consecutive year, after deterioration began in 2024.

For the Saigon River, the Water Quality Index (WQI) ranged from 57 to 93 between 2021 and 2023, indicating "moderate" to "very good" quality. However, conditions worsened in 2024 and 2025:

  • Ammonia levels exceeded national standards by 1.2–5.2 times.
  • Chemical oxygen demand (COD), an indicator of organic pollution, was 1.2–3.6 times above permitted levels.
  • In canals and tributaries flowing into the river, ammonia reached up to 87.8 times the regulatory limit, while COD exceeded it by 12.3 times.

The Dong Nai River has also experienced a decline after improving between 2021 and 2023. Ammonia levels exceeded standards by 1.2–1.7 times, while COD at several monitoring points was 1.5–2.2 times above permitted levels. Tributaries feeding the river recorded ammonia levels up to 35.6 times the limit.

The situation is particularly significant because these rivers supply major waterworks serving Ho Chi Minh City. Meanwhile, the city generates approximately 807,800 m³ of wastewater every day, placing further pressure on its river and lake network.

How Deteriorated Water Sources Affect Our Daily Wellbeing

Water quality is closely connected to our everyday wellbeing. When a city’s main water sources deteriorate, maintaining consistently high-quality water becomes more challenging and places greater importance on effective treatment and monitoring.

For health-conscious households, these concerns can extend beyond drinking water alone:

  • Internal stress and slower physical recovery: Fine particles, trace metals, and residual chemical byproducts build up over time, triggering low-grade internal inflammation that hinders tissue repair and post-workout muscle recovery.
  • Skin and hair vitality: Bathing in tap water containing heavy metals and raw sediments strips natural protective oils, causing chronic skin dryness, scalp irritation, and dull hair after every shower.
  • Daily comfort and hydration levels: Unwanted contaminants alter the natural freshness of water, creating subtle odors and tastes that negatively affect cellular hydration and diminish daily energy.
  • Long-term health: As urban water supplies face growing environmental pressure, relying on unmanaged tap water introduces ongoing physical strain, compromising your body's long-term immune defenses and overall resilience.

While municipal treatment plays an essential role in providing safe water, household filtration can add another layer of care. By treating water within the home, households can take a more active approach to the quality of the water they rely on every day.

BWT Whole-House Filtration for Better Water Quality

BWT Whole-House Filtration System acts as your home's central shield, treating municipal water the moment it enters your building. By removing fine sediments, rust, sand, and harsh chemical residual pollutants, BWT ensures every shower, tap, and appliance operates with pristine, clean water.

Complete Protection Against Urban Water Hazards

Municipal water networks often transport invisible particles, micro-sediments, and industrial residues through aging pipelines. BWT point-of-entry filters capture rust, sand, silt, and foreign particles before they enter your home's internal plumbing. This ensures hygienically safe, crystal-clear water flowing from every tap.

Radiant Skin and Strong, Healthy Hair

Showering in unfiltered tap water containing harsh disinfectants like chlorine strips away natural oils. BWT whole-house filtration eliminates harsh chemical irritants and sediments, preserving your body's natural moisture barrier.

  • Soft, smooth skin: Reduces chronic skin dryness, redness, and post-workout scalp irritation.
  • Shinier, Silky Hair: Prevents mineral buildup on the hair shaft, restoring natural shine and preventing color fading.

Safeguarding Household Infrastructure & Appliances

Small particles and sediments in water can travel through your pipes and gradually cause wear and damage over time.

  • Prevents pipe clogging: Keeps internal plumbing free from sediment accumulation and rust build-up.
  • Protects premium appliances: Shields washing machines, water heaters, and showerheads from premature wear, ensuring long-term operational efficiency and lowering repair costs.

Clean water transforms everyday domestic routines into a luxurious experience. With BWT Whole-House Filtration, unpleasant chemical odors and residual metallic tastes are neutralized right at the source, giving you peace of mind whether you are cooking, washing produce, bathing, or doing laundry.
